Tips on Seeding

Seeding Tips

The best time of year to seed Kentucky Bluegrass is end of August-September. But if you need to fix areas of your lawn that had winter damage here are some tips.

-Wait to go on your lawn until frost is out and your lawn is dry and firm. If you go on lawn too early you will cause compaction.

- When seeding do not add preemergent weed killers. Example crabgrass killer. This will kill your seed.

-It is important to fertilizer your lawn (refer to fertilizer tips)

-Make sure you know what kind of seed you are applying. READ the Label!! Bluegrass is most often planted in Minnesota and is often most expensive.

Here are the mixes we carry at Nagel's Nursery and Landscaping

Superior Blue Blend-3 to 4 varieties of Kentucky bluegrass great for overseeding and dormant seeding.

Nagels Mix- 2 varieties of Kentucky Bluegrass with annual ryegrass for cover crop. The annual ryegrass will mow or freeze out.

Contractor Mix- Perennial ryegrass, Creeping Red Fescue, Kentucky Bluegrass, and annual ryegrass. Use for low maintenance areas.

Low Light Shade Mix- Creeping Red Fescue, Perennial Ryegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, Chewy Fescue- Good for shade areas
